Dive the Whitsunday Islands - Airlie Beach, Australia

The central section of the Great Barrier Reef covers the Whitsunday Islands and all the reefs and islands between Townsville and Mackay also the outer reefs of Swain and Hardy.   Within this area you will find excellent scuba diving.   It also includes the Whitsunday Passage.  This is the tropical waterway that runs between the mainland and the Whitsunday Island group.  The Island group includes; Magnetic, Brampton, Lindeman, Hamilton, Long, South Molle, Daydream, Hook and Haymen.  They are all continental islands and most of them offer resort facilities with a large range of accommodations.  This area is a fascinating one with adventure looming for those of all ages.

The town of Airlie Beach

The town of Airlie Beach is the jumping off point for the Whitsunday island group.  There are numerous resorts in the area, either on the mainland or on the offshore islands.   A number of the islands are either partly or fully national parks. Many with bushwalking tracks leading to the more secluded sandy beaches, pockets of rainforest or forested hills.   The wildlife includes rock wallabies, sea eagles and ospreys,  The ideal way to explore the islands is to camp out, then sail, swim and snorkel over the surrounding reefs.  The islands with the best reefs for snorkeling are Hook, Border and North Molle.   A number of tour companies offer day trips to the inner reef for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and glass-bottomed boat rides.  By far the most popular way to experience the reef is by yacht, and the Whitsundays' are world famous for it’s bare boat sailing.

We have said it before, and will no doubt say it again, Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday area is like no other in Australia.   The diverse terrain, the islands, the reefs, the diving all make for an amazing place.
