Scuba Diving Sydney??
It's a toss up which comes to mind first when one thinks of Australia: the Great Barrier Reef or the City of Sydney. Sydney, with its opera house and parks and beaches and bridges, is the most populous city in Australia and was the home of the 2000 Olympic Games.
Getting to and from Sydney is easy. Sydney's international airport handles arrivals from all over the world, and there are flights from Sydney to most cities and towns within Australia. There's regularly scheduled train service to most cities in the country, and as well as a well organised bus system. The Pacific and New England Highways head north from the city, the Hume and Princes to the south, and the Great Western to the west. It's been said that Australia is ‘four-wheel’ drive country, and this can be so, but there are a number of other ways of to explore this massive country. Tours and safari-type trips are very well organised, reasonably priced, and depart from Sydney on a daily basis.
A vast tract of bush, organised as several national parks, surrounds the city of Sydney, offering incredibly spectacular views across enormous valleys and cliff faces. There are well marked walking trails, but in some areas watercraft and small aircraft provide an exciting alternative. Given the vastness, overnight trips offer the greatest opportunity for extensive exploration. Most parks have camping facilities or nearby towns, where accommodation is usually inexpensive. In particular, the Blue Mountains National Park areas have numerous guesthouses and less expensive backpacker-type accommodations.
Scuba diving in Sydney is ‘right at the front door’ -- from scenic to shipwreck. Dive sites are numerous and visibility is normally very good. Hire gear is available, and there are guides with extensive experience in the area (please see our recommended dive operators). You can dive as a novice diver or an experienced diver. You can upgrade your current certification or even learn to dive. The choice is all yours, because Sydney offers it all!
