Western Australia

The Coral Coast, in Western Australia, extends from North West Cape to the Tropic of Capricorn.   With reefs and beaches and hot, dry weather, this coast is a natural aquatic playground.  And the sharp contrast created by the high, rugged, uninhabited Cape Range National Park that backs beaches and lagoon, contributes to the sense of wild isolation the Coral Coast offers.

Cape Range and Ningaloo Marine Park link to form the Coral Coast, and together create a fascinating region of biological diversity and exciting holiday possibilties.  On the cape, reefs and mountains share a beachfront, and from the mouth of Yardie Creek the marine park extends a further 150 kilometers south.

Australia's longest fringing reef, it hugs the shoreline for nearly 275 kilometers.   A shallow, sandy lagoon has formed between reef and shoreline, making a paradise for snorkellers.  Over 200 species of coral make up the reef and more than 500 species of fish feed there.  Turtle, dugongs and whale sharks also inhabit these waters.  Close to shore (between 300 meters and 4 kilometers), the lagoon offers soft, tranquil waters, where sheltered swimming is available for even the most inexperienced swimmers or snorkellers.  The water in the lagoon maintains a fairly constant 30ºC/86ºF temperature, making swimming a delightful year-round experience.

The Coral Coast's desert-beach setting is unlike other reef locations around the world, and so offers yet another unique Australia holiday experience.  If you've visited, or plan to visit the Great Barrier Reef in Far North Queensland, you'll find a very different adventure awaiting you on the Coral Coast -- an adventure that's a must for any Australia travel itinerary.
